My sculptures are inspired by wood, animal bones, and objects found in the woods and watersheds of the Hudson Valley.
My sculptures are inspired by wood, animal bones, and objects found in the woods and watersheds of the Hudson Valley.
The raw materials from my natural sculpture works were found in the woods and wetlands of upstate New York. Living in this environment, and actively caring for the area, I spend time clearing a culvert of beaver gnawed wood while observing and monitoring life on a pond with herons, red wing blackbirds, osprey, otters, and other flora and fauna. I started seeing the land as a place with hidden stories and found beauty in animal skulls, bones, fallen trees and forest detritus. Discovering these in the landscape inspired me to consider each natural shape and the inherent playful and subdued qualities in these found objects. Working with a myriad of tools, chainsaws, and acrylic paint I reimagine the raw elements and endeavor to enhance the individual features into a distinctive artwork.
I call these Natural Sculptures.
